36x52” Watercolor and India Ink on paper.
This piece can either be a stand alone piece or it can be paired with one or both companion pieces “Mermaid Sentry” and “Pelagios”
This piece is waxed with a cold medium wax used to seal watercolors when it is desired to NOT use glass when framing. It is still recommended to avoid overly moist environments as well as to not hang in a spot that gets a lot of direct sunlight.
My paintings start with a pencil sketch followed by layers of watercolor until the saturation and tones are where I want them… and then comes the India Ink. Sometimes I can spend as many hours at this stage as I did in the painting itself.
Poseidon
Meet Poseidon, the salty-haired, trident-wielding god of the seas, ruler of the waves, and master of aquatic antics! Imagine him lounging on a throne made of coral, surrounded by frolicking dolphins and mischievous merfolk, with a twinkle in his sea-blue eyes and a mischievous grin playing on his lips.
In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was one of the mighty Olympian gods, born from the union of the titans Cronus and Rhea. His domain wasn't just limited to the shimmering depths of the ocean; he also held sway over earthquakes and storms, making him quite the triple-threat in the pantheon.
Poseidon's got quite the resume when it comes to representations throughout history. In classical art, he's often depicted as a strapping, bearded figure with a crown of seaweed adorning his head, and of course, his trusty trident clutched firmly in hand. Artists loved to capture his power and presence, often showing him riding the waves in a chariot pulled by magnificent sea creatures.
But Poseidon's fame didn't stop there! He's popped up in literature, too, making appearances in epic poems like Homer's "Odyssey" and "Iliad." Whether he's causing chaos with his tempestuous temper or lending a helping hand to intrepid heroes, Poseidon's always stirring up trouble in the most entertaining ways possible.
Even today, Poseidon's legacy lives on in popular culture. From movies to video games, he's a favorite character to splash into stories about the sea. And let's not forget his cameo appearances in countless cheesy tourist attractions and beach-themed restaurants—because who wouldn't want to dine surrounded by reminders of the god of the sea?
So, next time you're at the beach, keep an eye out for a glimmer of trident-toting mischief beneath the waves. Who knows, you might just catch a glimpse of Poseidon himself, riding a tsunami of fun and frolic!
